History
Established in 1885, Carew's was setup as an independent Wholesale and Retail Leather Merchant supplying the harness and shoe making trades with leather and grindery components. Situated in the centre of Limerick City the business thrived quickly and soon built up a reputation for high quality leathers.
The owner, James Carew, had formerly worked as manager with the Limerick Tannery, E. O’Callaghan & Sons, who were renowned for the quality of their leathers in the early part of the 20th century.
James Carew died in 1927 and was succeeded by his nephew, John Carew.
John Carew continued to successfully carry on the business while establishing himself as a local politician on Limerick City Council and eventually as a national politician in Dail Eireann until his death in 1968.During the 1950’s the leather supply business declined and he began to introduce luggage and leather goods to Limerick.
Richard Carew, son of John Carew, along with his son John Carew, the 3rd and 4th generation owners, continue to develop the shop in the area of luggage and leather goods, bringing to Limerick many fine brands of quality leather goods and luggage from world renowned manufacturers.
