Ryanair & Aer Lingus Under Seat Bag FAQs
Quick answers to the questions we hear most in our Limerick store. Airline rules can change, so always check your airline's website before you fly. Last checked: October 2026.
Airline rules and sizing
What size is the free under seat bag for Ryanair and Aer Lingus?
Both airlines allow a small personal item of up to 40 x 30 x 20cm. It must fit entirely under the seat in front of you. All the bags on this page are made to that size.
Is a 40x30x20cm bag free on Ryanair?
Yes. Ryanair's free personal item allowance covers one small bag that fits under the seat in front of you. Anything bigger is treated as a cabin bag and needs a paid option. Check Ryanair's website for their current rules before you travel.
Does the same bag work for Aer Lingus?
Yes. Aer Lingus also uses a 40 x 30 x 20cm size for its small under seat bag, so any bag listed here is made for both airlines. Check the Aer Lingus website for your fare type before you travel.
Do pockets, handles and wheels count towards the 40x30x20cm limit?
Usually yes. Airlines tend to measure the whole bag, so bulging front pockets, handles, straps and wheels can all count. A bag listed as 40 x 30 x 20cm is made to that overall size, but a soft bag stuffed past its limit can bulge beyond it, so leave a little room to spare when packing.
What happens if my bag is too big at the gate?
The airline can ask you to put your bag in the sizer, and if it doesn't fit you may be charged a fee to take it on board or put it in the hold. The simplest way to avoid this is to choose a bag made for 40 x 30 x 20cm and not overpack it, especially soft bags.
Can I bring a cabin suitcase as well as my under seat bag?
Usually only if your fare or an extra you've paid for includes a larger cabin bag. The free allowance is the small under seat bag only. If you want to carry more, check what your fare includes first.
Choosing the right under seat bag
Which under seat backpack fits the biggest laptop?
Several bags fit laptops up to 15.6 inches: the Samsonite Ecodiver and Cabin Pack, the CabinFly Under Seat Backpack, the Cabin Zero Classic 28L and the American Tourister Take 2. The Samsonite Biz2go takes up to 14.1 inches and the Samsonite Moderny up to 14 inches. The Samsonite backpacks also have a tablet pocket.
Which under seat bag holds the most?
The Samsonite Cabin Pack is the biggest at 29 litres, followed by the Cabin Zero Classic at 28 litres and the American Tourister Summer Ride at 27 litres. The Samsonite Ecodiver and Biz2go are 25 litres, and the Samsonite Moderny is 22.5 litres.
What is the cheapest Ryanair under seat bag you sell?
At the time of writing (October 2026), our lowest priced options are the CabinFly Duffle at 29 euro, the Samsonite Folding Cabin Bag at 35 euro and the CabinFly Under Seat Backpack at 36 euro. Prices can change, so check the product pages.
Should I choose a backpack, a duffel or a wheeled bag?
A backpack keeps your hands free and usually has a laptop pocket, so it suits city breaks and business trips. A duffel or boarding bag is lighter and simpler for a weekend away. A wheeled under seat bag saves your shoulders, but the wheels and handle add weight and take up some packing space.
Is there an under seat bag with wheels?
Yes. The CabinFly Wheeled Under Seat Backpack can be carried on your back or pulled on its wheels, and it fits the 40 x 30 x 20cm size. We also stock the CabinFly 40x30x20cm wheeled suitcase.
Is there a foldable under seat bag?
Yes. The Samsonite Folding Cabin Bag (TA Revolution) is a 40 x 30 x 20cm duffel that weighs just 0.3kg and folds into its own pouch. It has a detachable shoulder strap and a smart sleeve, so it works well as a spare bag in your suitcase.
Is there an expandable under seat backpack?
Yes. The CabinFly Under Seat Expandable Backpack is 40 x 30 x 15cm when compressed and 40 x 30 x 20cm when expanded, so it stays within the under seat size either way. It weighs 550g.
What is the best under seat bag for business travel?
The Samsonite Biz2go is made for it. It has a dedicated 14.1 inch laptop compartment, a 10.5 inch tablet pocket, a clothing compartment and mesh pockets. It weighs 1.1kg and has a smart sleeve for sliding over a suitcase handle.
Samsonite under seat bags
Which Samsonite under seat bags do you stock?
We stock five Samsonite bags in the 40 x 30 x 20cm size: the Cabin Pack (29L), Ecodiver (25L), Biz2go (25L) and Moderny (22.5L) backpacks, plus the Folding Cabin Bag (TA Revolution), which is a lightweight duffel. We are an authorised Samsonite dealer in Limerick.
What is the difference between the Samsonite Cabin Pack, Ecodiver and Moderny?
The Cabin Pack is the biggest at 29 litres (1.1kg), with compression straps and a 15.6 inch laptop compartment. The Ecodiver is 25 litres (1kg), made from recycled nylon and PET with a water-repellent fabric, an air-flow back panel and a 15.6 inch laptop compartment. The Moderny is the lightest backpack at 0.8kg and 22.5 litres, with a 14 inch laptop compartment and two bottle pockets.
What is the lightest Samsonite under seat bag?
The Samsonite Folding Cabin Bag (TA Revolution) is the lightest at 0.3kg. Among the backpacks, the Samsonite Moderny is the lightest at 0.8kg.
Are Samsonite under seat bags made from recycled materials?
Yes. The Moderny is made from 100% recycled polyester, the Biz2go uses 100% post-consumer recycled PET for the outer fabric and lining, the Folding Cabin Bag is made from 100% recycled PET, and the Ecodiver uses recycled nylon and PET.
Are Samsonite under seat backpacks waterproof?
They are water-resistant rather than waterproof. The Cabin Pack, Moderny and Biz2go have water-resistant fabric and the Ecodiver has water-repellent fabric. That helps protect your things from light rain and spills, but don't leave them out in heavy rain.
What is a smart sleeve on a travel backpack?
A smart sleeve is a strap or pocket on the back of the bag that slides over the handle of a suitcase, so your under seat bag rides on top of your luggage while you walk. The Samsonite Cabin Pack, Ecodiver, Moderny, Biz2go and Folding Cabin Bag all have one.
Features and comfort
Which under seat backpacks have a sternum strap?
The Samsonite Cabin Pack, Ecodiver and Biz2go all have a sternum strap. It clips across your chest to spread the weight, which is helpful on longer walks through the airport. The Biz2go's strap is removable.
Which under seat bags have a bottle pocket?
The Samsonite Cabin Pack, Ecodiver and Biz2go each have a side bottle holder, and the Moderny has two bottle pockets. A side bottle pocket is handy because you can't take a full bottle through security.
