1. What size cabin suitcase can I take on a plane?

The permitted cabin suitcase size depends on your airline, ticket type and baggage allowance. Many airlines allow an overhead cabin case around 55 cm tall, but the permitted width, depth and weight vary. Check your airline's current rules and measure the suitcase including its wheels and handles before travelling.

2. What size cabin suitcase is allowed on Ryanair?

Ryanair's small personal bag allowance is up to 40 × 30 × 20 cm and the bag must fit under the seat. Eligible passengers with Priority or another qualifying allowance may also bring a cabin suitcase up to 55 × 40 × 20 cm, with a maximum weight of 10 kg. Allowances can depend on the booking, so check the official Ryanair baggage policy before departure.

3. What size cabin suitcase can I take on Aer Lingus?

Aer Lingus cabin baggage limits depend on your route, fare and booking conditions. Check the permitted dimensions, weight and whether an overhead cabin bag is included in your ticket before choosing your suitcase. Read the official Aer Lingus baggage information for the latest allowance. For most journeys 55x40x24cm is the allowable size.

4. What is the difference between a cabin suitcase and an underseat bag?

A cabin suitcase is generally designed for an aircraft's overhead locker, while an underseat bag is designed to fit beneath the seat in front of you. Some fares include only a small personal item, with a larger overhead bag requiring an additional allowance or payment. Choose according to the baggage included with your ticket.

Browse our underseat bags if you need a smaller bag for the space beneath your seat.

5. Should I buy a hard-shell or soft-shell cabin suitcase?

A hard-shell cabin suitcase offers a structured exterior and is generally easy to wipe clean. A soft-shell suitcase may provide useful external pockets and some flexibility when packing. Consider the type of items you carry, the organisation you need, the suitcase weight and the construction that best suits your travel style.

6. What should I look for in a lightweight cabin suitcase?

Look for a low empty weight, practical packing capacity, durable construction and smooth-rolling wheels. A lighter suitcase leaves more of your airline's permitted baggage weight available for your belongings. Compare the product's listed weight, dimensions, capacity, handles and warranty before making your choice.

7. Are expandable cabin suitcases worth buying?

An expandable cabin suitcase provides extra packing space when its expansion section is opened. However, the extra depth may exceed your airline's permitted cabin dimensions. Check both the standard and expanded measurements, and make sure the case meets your allowance in the configuration you intend to use.
